At least 450 people were detained in Belarus from April to June

For four years in a row, human rights defenders have been daily recording facts of human rights violations in Belarus. People continue to be detained en masse for subscribing to independent media, using profile pictures with national symbols, and refusing to open doors for a search. Viasna human rights activists have calculated the total number of detentions for the second quarter of 2024.

According to Viasna, from April 1 to June 30, 1,756 cases of politically motivated repression (searches, interrogations, trials, etc.) were recorded in Belarus, of which 450 were detentions. Human rights defenders are also aware of at least 1,079 administrative trials in three months. Most often, people are tried for “extremist” subscriptions and reposts on social media under Article 19.11 of the Administrative Code. Detentions after phone checks at the Belarusian border also do not stop.

Thus, in the first six months of 2024, at least 1,437 people were detained in Belarus.
